Ukraine is considering the legalization and taxation of pornography to raise crucial funds for its war effort. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, a bill has already passed its first reading in Parliament and is now awaiting the second. The goal is to regulate a sector that, despite its rapid growth, remains technically illegal in the country, creating tax paradoxes for content creators.
Yaroslav Zhelezniak, a co-author of the proposal, estimates that taxes from the industry could generate up to $25 million annually. This figure, while modest compared to the $120 billion needed for defense, would be sufficient to purchase approximately 30,000 drones. The cited data highlights a solid market: in 2023, about 7,900 Ukrainians earned over $131 million through platforms like OnlyFans.
Currently, creators who declare their income face the risk of criminal proceedings for the activity itself, despite their earnings. Legalization should eliminate this contradiction, reduce corruption related to tips for local officials, and free up resources for law enforcement. One creator cited in the report stated that they had paid nearly $900,000 in taxes, an amount comparable to the cost of thousands of military vehicles.
